After tasting 715 wines from Chile, journalist Joaquín Hidalgo issued his veredict on the country’s industry for his Vinous Report: “the reality of the wine scene in Chile is changing quickly. New style of wines, favoring freshness and early picking, while enhancing the local character are some of these trends.”.

However, classic regions such as Maipo for Cabernet Sauvignon, are also doing this differently; “Other regions in Maipo are also focusing on ever more precise vine management. Viña Santa Rita and Viña Carmen in Alto Jahuel are examples of producers that segment by soil type and variety. ‘Over time, we’ve been scientifically replanting the vines, using fresher hillsides and exposures for varieties that are more sensitive to heat,’ said Sebastián Labbé, who shared a map of the soils and parcels over Zoom. Labbé's 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Casa Real is indeed a far more precise wine than previous incarnations”, comments Hidalgo.

Santa Rita:
Casa Real Reserva Especial 2018, 95 points: “Classical in every way, the complex, detailed aromatic profile improves with each layer and includes black currant, herb, graphite, roasted pepper, rose petal and spice notes over a bed of cedar. In the mouth it is full, juicy and extractive – up to 15% is pressed juice – with elegant, fine-grained tannins. Expressive with a lingering aftertaste, this is the very definition of a Cabernet from Maipo”.

Bougainville 2018, 93 points: “The 2018 Petite Sirah Bougainville also has a dash (8%) of Syrah, both from old vines in Alto Jahuel, and spent up to 19 months in medium-toasted French oak barrels, 40% new. Deep purple in the glass, it offers a nose of plum jam with hints of blackberry jam, allspice, mint and balsamic aromas. Concentrated and indulgent in the mouth, it delivers volume and firm tannins as part of a remarkably powerful blast of fruit and oak”.

Pewën de Apalta 2019, 93 points: “Rich purple in color. The nose features ripe blackberry and black currant along with hints of cotton candy, herbs and white pepper over a bed of wood. Substantial on the palate with firm tannins and a juicy feel, it has a measured structure and fruity potency”.

Triple C 2017, 92 points: “The fragrant, pyrazine-inflected aromas also include oak, black currant and blueberry with hints of mint and white pepper. Indulgent on the palate, it presents firm tannins and good volume very much in the layered Chilean Bordeaux red style”.

Other Santa Rita wines recognized were Floresta Carménère 2019 and Medalla Real Gran Reserva Chardonnay 2020 with 92 points, and Floresta Cabernet Franc 2019, Floresta Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, Medalla Real Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 with 91 points.
